Clay glanced at his passenger, caught his eyes. They
were green. Even in the dim light of the car he could see
their color. His own eyes felt huge, heavy, tired, ready
to close. Just as he shifted his eyes back to the road
he saw something in front of the car. It was a man. Someone
in the middle of the road. Clay slammed on the breaks but
he was going too fast. Clay stretched out his arm towards
Jason, as if to prepare him for a sudden stop. Outside,
in the road, the man stretched out his arms towards Clay’s
car, the palms flat open and the fingers wide. In the seconds
that Clay’s car closed in on the man the details
flashed into view — the spikey hair, the goatee,
the sleeveless vest, the dark stretch of legs, and the
black boots. The impact sent the man under the wheels of
Clay’s car. Clay felt the shock absorbers fail to
cushion the horror. Clay twisted the wheel, even though
it was too late. The car banked, flipped over onto its
side, and skidded to a stop when it hit a pole.
